Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a chronic condition affecting the movement of the jaw. It is very common and can affect up to 80% of the population and usually gets better on its own. However, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is when diseases affect the TM joint (such as arthritis, ganglion, infection, trauma, metabolic bone disorders, malignancy) and cartilaginous disc, which is less common and can contribute to TMD symptoms. It is important to establish the underlying cause of your TMD symptoms (usually jaw pain, limitation of mouth opening, clicking and locking) to effectively treat it. Schedule an appointment if you are unsure what is causing your chronic jaw or facial pain.
